Magnolia Clubhouse

Magnolia Clubhouse is a community that creates opportunities for people living with mental illness. Our mission is to ensure that people who have a mental illness are respected coworkers, neighbors and friends. Formerly known as Hill House, the Clubhouse has been promoting vocational, educational, social, and personal achievement as a center of psychosocial rehabilitation, since 1961.

Within Our Clubhouse

Hospitality
Hospitality is the work of the first floor. We welcome all and make a nutritious lunch for everyone each day, using the produce from our vegetable garden in season. Our Cafe' provides snacks and beverages in a relaxed environment. We beautify our surroundings with our flower boxes, flower gardens, and goldfish pond. We also coordinate the upkeep and repair of our clubhouse, the backup and maintenance of our computer network, as well as oversee the renovation and expansion of Clubhouse space.

Business
Business, on the second floor, enrolls and orients new members and oversees membership statistics. We conduct the budgeting and book-keeping and all financial matters for the Clubhouse. We organize volunteers, student interns, advocacy, educational resourses and produce a monthly inhouse newsletter, "The Insider". We also operate the Clubhouse thrift store and art gallery- Bloomin'.

Communications
Communications is the work that takes place on the third floor. A daily in-house video news program and promotional videos, are some of the things produced in our video lab using member's and staff's creativity. We also operate an art studio. We publish weekly and quarterly newsletters, and manage Clubhouse records and supplies. We organize educational efforts, research and development, and assist members in determining their benefits and tax refunds.

Within the Community

Employment
An essential feature of Clubhouses is Transitional Employment, which is part time temporary employment in the community with area employers. The jobs pay at least minimum wage. Each position is held by a member for between 6 and 9 months. The Clubhouse develops and supports the positions and provides guaranteed job coverage. The member working in the position is an employee of the company. This is often the first step in obtaining work experience and confidence.

The Clubhouse also assists members who wish to obtain ongoing independent employment. Rates of employment at Clubhouses are at least four times higher than the national average for people who have a mental illness.

Education
Magnolia Clubhouse encourages and mentors members interested in furthering their education. Members attend area colleges, work on obtaining G.E.D.s, and improve literacy and math skills, taking advantage of the tutoring talents of other members.

Social Recreational Activities
The Clubhouse offers social recreational activities during evenings, weekends, and holidays. To name a few of our activities, we visit local restaurants for international dinners, enjoy area sporting events and movies, and participate in the University Circle festivities, and much, much more!
